| This gallery is of the rare new mineral from Utah, Dickthomssenite which is MgV2O6 • 7H2O. The type location is the Firefly Pigmay Mine in San Juan County. It is reported that only about 2 flats of specimens were recovered. These are mostly micros and perhaps thumbnails but are extremely hard to acquire. A second location, the Vanadium Queen Mine, also in San Juan County, Utah, was also discovered to have some specimens of this rare new mineral. These are small to large miniature sized specimens. The Dickthomssenite is still a micro mineral and these well crystallized specimens are best viewed with a microscope to see the crystals. However for those who do not collect micros or even thumbnails, a few miniatures are now available for rare mineral and Utah suite collectors. These are the only two locations in the world that this mineral is known to have occurred. Note: this is a soluble mineral, so it can not be in water! December 2004 |
