The
Elmwood Mine located located near the town of Carthage in Smith County,
Tennesse is most known for its superb golden twinned and untwinned Calcite
specimens. In addition superb purple Fluorite specimens with
Fluorites cubes in many sizes, some exceeding Five inches across, have also
been produced. Exceptional Barite, Sphalerite, and to a lesser extent
Galena specimens make up the balance of the minerals from Elmwood in
collections all over the world. During 1997, Top Gem Minerals had a
contract with the mines to extract mineral specimens which lasted a couple of
years.
These are specimens which are part of the top 1% in quality of specimens Top
Gem collected. They have been set aside for the past 6 years and
not previously offered for sale. March

covering the matrix. This is a superb specimen. The three isolated
Sphalerite clusters make this a very esthetic specimen.

Elmwood Mine, Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee
5.5 x 6 x 7 cm, main xl 3.5 cm
Lustrous, black, quite large, undamaged
main Sphalerite crystal, this is a superb specimen. The base is roughly 6
cm on a side, triangular, and 2 to 3 cm thick. It is covered with
Sphalerite crystals and has a little damage or contact on the back corner as
seen in the fourth picture. This is hidden when displayed from the front,
which shows off the main large Sphalerite crystal as seen in the first
picture. This crystal is 3.5 cm high and is 3 x 2.5 cm at the crystal's
base.
1697 Galena - $
Elmwood Mine, Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee
7 x 6 x 7 cm
Lustrous, undamaged, grey, the
multi cube growth on this Galena is esthetic and it sits perfectly for
display. This is a superb Galena specimen which are uncommon at the
Elmwood Mine. Most of the Galena's that are found at Elmwood are coated
with an esthetically challenged black material or tend to be small. This
specimen does not appear to have any point of contact. It also has a few
white Dolomite rhombs and even a small purple Fluorite attached which definitely
identify the Galena as an Elmwood specimen.
